A beaker or flask containing the liquid is placed on a plate, which may be heated. A magnetic stirring bar, coated with glass or plastic, is added to the liquid. Below the plate, a magnet rotates at an adjustable speed, causing the stir bar to rotate and thereby mixing the sample. Temperature control ensures uniform heating of the vessel contents.
Magnetic stirrers with heating
When a magnetic stirrer includes an integrated, controllable heating element, it is referred to as a heating magnetic stirrer. The heating plates of these devices are typically made of glass ceramic or stainless steel, suitable for containers of various sizes and types, such as beakers or Erlenmeyer flasks. Heating is regulated through the integrated heating system.
Difference between magnetic stirrers and Bunsen burners
Compared to heating individual samples with a Bunsen burner, magnetic stirrers with heating plates offer advantages such as achieving a consistently regulated temperature for samples. They also allow for safe handling of flammable liquids and solvents, which is not entirely safe with an open flame.
Advantages of magnetic stirrers
Underneath the heating plate, a magnet rotates at a precisely controlled speed. Inside the vessel on the heating plate, a rod-shaped magnet, known as a magnetic stirring bar or stir bar, also rotates, mixing the liquid. Stir bars, often coated with PTFE, are inert and do not react with the solutions they stir. After use, stir bars can be easily removed from the mixing vessel for cleaning.
Heating duration with magnetic stirrers
Magnetic stirrers with integrated heating not only ensure uniform heating but also effective mixing of liquids, reducing the risk of boiling over. In contrast, heating liquids over an open flame, especially with larger quantities and longer heating durations, requires more precise temperature control.

Application of magnetic stirring bars
Magnetic stirring bars, also known as magnetic fish or stir fish, are essential components of magnetic stirrers. They are commonly used in conjunction with heating magnetic stirrers, which you can also find in our product range. The stir fish is attracted and held in place by the stirrer's magnetic field at the bottom of the flask. This ensures the stir fish remains stationary within the flask, facilitating the re-solution of deposits. Depending on the specific requirements, various sizes and types of stir fish are available. After use, stir fish can be easily removed from the flask and cleaned using a stir fish remover.
