Order scales online in the häberle Laboratory Technology Shop

In the häberle online shop, you will find specialized laboratory scales, precision scales, analytical scales, and balance scales. These are required in quality assurance, research, development, and pharmaceutical laboratories to precisely dose active ingredients, for example. Additionally, you will find numerous accessories and other products in the field of measurement technology.

What is an analytical scale?

An analytical scale is a highly precise weighing instrument. Due to the high sensitivity of the weighing cells, analytical scales are equipped with a draft shield to ensure a stable weighing environment. With a maximum load capacity ranging from 52 to 520 grams and a readability of 0.002 to 1 milligram, analytical scales are among the most accurate in the world. Common applications include sample and standard preparation, differential weighing, density determination, and pipette calibration checks. Analytical scales operate with the finest resolution and high weighing ranges. If the weighing process were to lose the smallest particles, it would already compromise the weighing process. Furthermore, particles or other external influences could additionally affect the weighing results. To counteract such distortions, a comprehensive glass enclosure, also known as a draft shield, is used. This allows for maximum weighing accuracy to be achieved.

Features and execution of analytical scales:

The draft shield is the most distinctive feature of analytical scales. It keeps external influences away from the weighed material and weighing pan. These types of scales can be divided into three versions: calibratable, calibrated, and capable of calibration. Modern scales can automatically open the draft shield using built-in motion sensors. Other scales mechanically open the plastic or glass shield. Analytical scales are special precision scales and have special features. The most important features are listed below:

  • Draft shield
  • Maximum possible precision of scales
  • Automatic calibration
  • Filter for measurement values (filters measurement values and displays only usable values to the user)
  • Piece counting function
  • Recipe function (for pharmacies and laboratories)
  • GLP logging
  • Density determination
  • Calibration and adjustment of analytical scales

When analytical scales are used in commercial transactions, in the production of medicines, for analytical purposes in the laboratory, or for the production of prepackaged products, the scales must be officially calibrated. The official calibration of scales is legally required according to EU Directive 90/384/EEC. At häberle, you will find many analytical scales that can be officially calibrated. You can recognize the calibrated analytical scales or precision scales by the marking "M". Calibration and adjustment depend on the location, so the definitive location in the laboratory must always be named for calibration preparation. The validity period of calibration for scales of all calibration classes is two years. The different types of scales are divided into three calibration classes:

  • Calibration class I: Analytical scales
  • Calibration class 2: Precision scales
  • Calibration class 3: Industrial scales

Operation of analytical scales

Before starting the weighing process, ensure that the draft shield is completely closed. Set the display to 0 by pressing the tare button. Place the test weight or sample on the weighing area. After a short time, the unit symbol mg or g will be displayed on the screen. The results are recorded at equal intervals. If you need longer breaks between individual weighing processes, we recommend briefly loading and then unloading the weighing pan. This ensures the best possible accuracy of the analytical scales.

Proper handling of analytical scales

Studies by Sartorius have provided valuable insights that lead to better handling of analytical scales. Improved accuracy, for example, can be achieved by considering various factors during use. Below, we have listed factors that positively influence your weighing process:

The workspace According to the study

The best position for your weighing table is in the corner of the room. Direct sunlight, excessively adjusted air conditioning, or building vibrations can adversely affect your weighing process.

Humidity Another factor that can have serious consequences on your weighing results, especially in the laboratory, is humidity. Changes in humidity affect the buoyancy effect of weighing materials and weights. The study recommends maintaining a constant humidity between 45% and 60%.

Accuracy Modern analytical scales

Feature innovative automatic calibration systems that largely adjust the required settings independently. To quickly identify deviations, a daily check of the set value is recommended.

Weighing material and weighing vessel Never touch the weighing material and vessels with your hands. Use the smallest possible weighing vessel for your samples. Furthermore, consider the electrostatic chargeability of plastic materials at low humidity. Samples and weighing vessels should be slightly warmed before the weighing process, as temperature is directly related to weight.

Maintenance of weighing equipment

After completing the weighing process, ensure that both the weighing pan and the workspace are kept clean. Particle residues on the weighing pan can significantly affect the weight result in the fine weighing range. High cleanliness in caring for sensitive analytical or precision scales, as well as their installation sites, clearly correlates with improved accuracy of the scales.

Frequently asked questions about analytical scales?

What are the maximum load specifications for analytical scales in the laboratory? Analytical scales in the gram or milligram range and with the highest accuracy operate in laboratories. For this reason, they have relatively low maximum loads. Weights from 520 grams are already in the higher range.

Are highly sensitive analytical scales easy to use?

Due to the multitude of technical functions that maximize the accuracy of analytical scales, there is a certain risk of error. For this reason, personnel should be trained by experts in handling sensitive weighing equipment.

Are analytical scales compatible with PC and printer?

To ensure clean logging, most analytical scales have a data interface such as WiFi, Bluetooth, or USB. This allows them to be directly connected to a printer or laptop.

Use in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries A precision scale is an extremely precise, highly robust scale that allows maximum loads from 120g to loads of 64kg with a readability of 1g to 0.1mg. Models with lower readability have a draft shield to achieve top performance. In contrast, models suitable for higher loads have a larger weighing pan. Precision scales are used in a wide range of investigations and applications in laboratories or production environments. For example, in sample and standard preparation, formulation, statistical quality control, and counting applications. A micro scale is a highly precise instrument that can weigh the smallest samples with exact accuracy. For example, METTLER TOLEDO micro scales score with a maximum load of up to 52g and a readability of up to 0.1 µg. This allows you to weigh your samples with a weight of up to 30 µg. Micro scales are used not only in chemical and elemental analyses but also in emission testing and applications involving minute quantities of rare, toxic, highly effective, or valuable substances. To determine the moisture content using the drying loss method, a moisture analyzer is used in residual moisture measurement. In addition to the weighing unit, this includes a heating unit. Qualitative moisture analyzers here meet the requirements of the food, pharmaceutical, and chemical industries.
