Bottle-top dispenser: functional principle and areas of application
Many laboratories have a lot of work to do. That's why it's important that working with liquids works well. This saves time and ensures better results. Bottle-top dispensers help to measure and dose liquids precisely. This is useful when you have to use a lot of reagents such as alkalis, acids or solvents.
There are different types of bottle-top dispensers. What they all have in common is that the employee screws them onto storage bottles and can then use various methods to dispense the liquid contained within. Digital dispensers work like pipettes. The employee can dispense the desired volume by moving the piston up or down. Analogue dispensers are adjusted manually. The piston is then pulled up to fill the cylinder with solution. There are also electronic dispensers with displays. Another advantage of bottle-top dispensers is that you no longer have to adjust the meniscus.
There are two types of piston: a stripping piston and a floating piston. For certain chemicals, a piston with a seal is required. This seal closes the gap between the piston and the dosing cylinder. This creates friction, which can result in higher operating forces. However, many devices have a spring support. The seal is a wearing part. This type of bottle-top dispenser is particularly suitable for less aggressive and crystallizing reagents.
If you are working with critical substances, variants with a floating piston are more suitable. This is especially true for handling these substances:
• concentrated acids
• organic solvents
• Alkalis
• viscous media The gap between piston and cylinder is closed by a liquid.
Bottle-top dispenser: added value in the laboratory
Bottle-top dispensers make serial dosing more efficient and safer. The user no longer has to handle the laboratory bottles themselves. This means that nothing can go wrong. Some dispensers even close the dosing cannula when not in use. This is particularly good when handling aggressive media. Check whether the dispenser is suitable for the medium. If so, the devices are easy to maintain for liquid handling. They can usually be disassembled and some can be autoclaved at 121 °C. Our blog covers many other topics in the field of liquid handling. For example, dispensers, like other volume measuring devices, must be calibrated regularly so that precise dosing can be achieved.

Hirschmann dispensers are available in various volumes, e.g.
Available in 10 ml, 20 ml and 50 ml. These dispensers combine efficiency, functionality and ease of use.
The electronic control system also offers the possibility of carrying out serial dosing with consistently reliable results. In addition, a method memory for nine different dosing processes with storage of all settings is integrated.
Bottle-top dispenserDosing with the highest reliability
Bottle-top dispensers from
VITLAB have a wide range of applications for volume-accurate dosing. VITLAB ® genius 2 and simplex 2 can be used almost universally, while the VITLAB ® TA 2 dispenser was specially developed for use in trace analysis and with highly concentrated media. The use of chemically resistant materials makes VITLAB bottle-top dispensers very robust and reliable. They can be screwed onto all standard laboratory bottles directly or with the help of an adapter, so that there is no need to transfer chemicals.
